Now and then I’ve seen hummingbirds fly through the backyard, pause, look around and fly on to another yard. I felt rejected.

Nothing is blooming in my yard except for some clover growing in the shade. We’re all just trying to survive the drought. With no flowers to attract hummers, I did the next best thing. I bought a hummingbird feeder and hung it on the cherry tree.

Hummingbirds will be migrating in another month. I thought I’d be lucky if I saw any birds at all. I was wrong. I spotted a hummer on the feeder the second day and every day since.

There are two hummingbirds. One has claimed the tree as his territory and chases away the other with amazing aerial bluster.

He spends more time guarding his new domain than slurping at the feeder.
