My last Six on Saturday was all about what was blooming in my yard. This one is all about the food growing in my yard.
The first tomatoes of summer, lovely Arkansas Travelers from Sow True Seed, are well on their way. It’s amazing how big these things get. They grew from tiny seedlings into massive 5 foot tall bushes.
I found garlic does very well when grown in pots where rabbits can’t get to them.
The slow-growing alpines finally graduated into bigger pots. I can’t plant enough of these things.
The lemon cucumbers are producing so much, I’m giving them away to anyone who shows the slightest interest.
I pickled five jars of the cucumbers. To make an even six, I cheated and added a jar of pickled ramps.
I was aiming for six of Six on Saturday. If I’d been faster to help with pollination, I would have six baby squash by now, but I only have three. I do have three more candy roaster plants growing, so there may be more in another month.
Check out the original Six on Saturday.
I must try garlic this autumn. There have been some impressive harvests on Six-on-Saturday. Interesting Six.

Thanks. This is garlic from a bulb I bought 5 years ago. It’s a bit late in the year, but I just planted an elephant garlic bulb. I’ve never grown one of those before.

The pickled lemon cucumbers are rad. After reading so much about the ramps earlier, I want to try our native wild onions. I know they are nothing like ramps, but I know they must be good for something, and they are very common. Even if they lack in flavor, they can be improved by pickling! Only a few years ago, I ignored the native blue elderberries, and now they are one of the favorites.

Do your native onions look like this: http://www.eattheweeds.com/allium-canadense-the-stinking-rose-2/
I have these all over the yard. I tried cooking them, but they were woody and tasteless.

They are rather tasteless, as well as fibrous, but look like this: https://tonytomeo.wordpress.com/2018/04/13/onion-weed/

It’s good they aren’t the tasteless things in my yard.

Lemon cukes are new to me. The internet says they’re good for cooler climates, so might try them next year. That tomato is doing great – 5′ tall? Wow. There was a ramp festival where I used to live, had recipe contests. It was so great, but the smell . . . phew! Never had them pickled, though. Such an interesting Six!

Thank you. These are non hybrid or open pollinated tomatoes. My impression is they get a LOT bigger than the hybrids.

A very hunger-inducing six! those lemon cucumbers look lovely. Do they smell citrusy too or is it just the shape?

It’s just the shape which makes them a novelty. Inside they’re all cucumber.

I had garlic growing in the ground and in some bags. I must have planted them too close in the bags, they were a lot smaller than the ones in the ground. A good harvest though. About 3 years worth at our normal rate of use!

What kind of bags are you using to grow your garlic?
